Give a new ship its technical heart

As a Commissioning Engineer New Build in the South of the Netherlands, you step aboard a ship under construction. The technical room is empty, only the cables are ready. You turn it into a working whole. You install navigation and communication equipment and connect everything neatly and clearly. You mainly work at large shipyards around Gorinchem. It is a full-time job with fixed working hours, where your craftsmanship stays visible.

What makes this role unique?

As a Commissioning Engineer, you deliver craftsmanship here. Clients expect a very high finishing standard, and you get the time and resources to achieve it. It is no coincidence that the installations are known as “little paintings”.

Unlike a breakdown service, newbuild work gives you regularity. You follow the fixed working hours of the shipyard, from 08:00 to 16:30. In the evening, you are simply home. You work in a close-knit, pragmatic team where your ideas are valued.

What will you do?

You are responsible for the full installation process on newbuild vessels. Experience with navigation equipment is not required: you learn it from experienced colleagues.

  • Installation: you mount navigation and communication equipment in the technical room, the masts and the wheelhouse;
  • Connecting: you read cable diagrams, pull cables, fit connectors and finish everything neatly and fault-free;
  • Quality: you make sure every system is installed robustly and can withstand the conditions at sea;
  • Work preparation: you help decide the most logical and efficient order of the work;
  • Client contact: you consult clearly and professionally with project managers and shipyard staff.

An example from practice

You arrive at the shipyard in the morning. A new ship is in its final construction phase, and the mast is still on the quay. Together with your colleague, you decide to mount the radars and antennas on the ground first. That is safer and faster than working at height later. Then you go to the technical room. Using the cable diagrams, you decide the best position for the equipment. You connect all the numbered cables and route them neatly. At the end of the day, you see the result: a well-organised installation, ready for rough weather at sea.

What you bring

You work very accurately and have an eye for detail. Technical insight and motivation count for more than years of experience. Have you just completed your electrical engineering education? Then you are very welcome too.

  • Education: a completed education in electrical engineering, electronics or similar, at least at MBO level 3;
  • Skills: you can read technical drawings and cable diagrams, and you enjoy installation and cabling work;
  • Language: a good command of spoken and written English is a must, and Dutch is a plus;
  • Driving licence: you hold a category B driving licence.

A trial day with the team is a fixed part of the selection process. It lets you find out for yourself whether the work and the team suit you.
