Keep the maritime world moving
A ship in the port of Rotterdam cannot leave because its radar has failed. As a Field Service Engineer Maritime in the South of the Netherlands, you step aboard and fix it. You commission, maintain and repair navigation and communication systems. You do this on inland and seagoing vessels, from Rotterdam and Moerdijk to Vlissingen and Antwerp. Your work area extends to about 1.5 to 2 hours’ drive around Zwijndrecht. A full-time job where your skills make a visible difference.
What makes this role unique?
As a Field Service Engineer, you join a close-knit team, not a large and slow organisation. The team sets a high bar for finishing: its installations are known as “little paintings”. Overtime is not the norm. After a day on board, you are simply home again.
You work from home and do not need to visit the office in Zwijndrecht every day. Your materials are delivered to the office, your home, the client or a nearby location. Your time goes into the work, not the journey.
What will you do?
No two days are the same. One day you commission new equipment on a newbuild vessel. The next, you solve an urgent fault on board an inland vessel. You work independently and represent your employer at the client.
- Commissioning: you configure and test navigation and communication equipment, and join sea trials;
- Faults: you carry out repairs and maintenance independently and solve faults on board existing vessels;
- Client contact: you communicate clearly and calmly with captains and ship owners, even under time pressure;
- Reporting: you record your hours and materials accurately in a service report;
- Improving: you help find smarter work sequences and better service for the client.
An example from practice
It is Thursday morning and your phone rings. A cargo ship in the port of Rotterdam has a radar fault and cannot leave. You get into your van with tools and spare parts. On board, you meet a tense captain. You stay calm, ask the right questions and start your analysis. Within an hour, you find the faulty part and replace it. After a test run, everything works again. The ship leaves, you write your report and drive to your next job.
What you bring
You are resourceful and solve problems on the spot, even with someone watching. You like to work independently and you represent your employer well at the client.
- Education: electrical engineering, electronics or maritime engineering at MBO level 4, or 5 years of independent service on this equipment;
- Experience: at least 3 years of service on board, with navigation and communication equipment or marine electrical systems;
- Language: a good command of spoken and written English is a must, and Dutch is a plus;
- Driving licence: you hold a category B driving licence;
- Travel: you mainly work in the Netherlands and sometimes abroad, for example in Antwerp or Hamburg.
A trial day with the team is a fixed part of the selection process. So you can see whether the work and the team suit you.
